Telefónica Tech, through its GSL IoT division, is deploying massive smart metering solutions on Cellular IoT networks. As of May 3, 2025, they have connected millions of devices in Spain alone using NB-IoT technology, a protocol optimized for IoT communications. This connectivity is applied across various sectors including smart cities, gas management, and water management. Key applications involve asset control such as gas meters, water meters, car beacons, street lamps, and parking meters. However, the large-scale deployment of cellular IoT presents challenges including narrow radio channels, limited reachability areas, battery constraints of simple devices, and the need for network core authentication platforms. To tackle these, Telefónica Tech has developed a comprehensive methodology that spans the entire project lifecycle, including certification, deployment, field operation, and scalability considerations. They have also implemented a Smart Meter Management System (SMITE) that incorporates active probes and data analytics to enhance operations and customer service. The results of their approach are demonstrated by a significant improvement in connection success rates, with typical initial ratios jumping from 10% to 99.6%. This showcases the effectiveness of their methodology and tools in overcoming the limitations of IoT deployments.
