The Georgia Tech Center for Urban and Regional Air Mobility (CURAM) is dedicated to researching and promoting urban air mobility (UAM) solutions. UAM is proposed as a time-saving alternative to driving in congested cities. Key aspects of CURAM's focus include user experience with air taxis and on-demand goods delivery, advancement of aircraft technology such as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and autonomous flight, operations and infrastructure involving vertiports and airspace management, and public policy including city planning and certification processes. Notable investments in UAM companies include $100 million from Intel & Daimler for Volocopter andJoby S4 receiving investment from Intel, Toyota, and JetBlue. There is a potential for 25-35 U.S. cities to adopt UAM with a 50-mile aircraft range considered adequate. CURAM is part of several Georgia Tech institutes focusing on sustainability, automation, and smart cities, among others. It hosted an event in 2019 with keynotes from Mark Moore of Uber and involvement from local chambers of commerce. Current research includes demand modeling, aircraft design, and operation, with an aim to secure funding for these initiatives. Contact information for Laurie Garrow and Brian German, Associate Director and Director of CURAM, respectively, is provided.
