The study examines how public relations (PR) professionals measure success in 2022 and predicts trends for 2023. Key findings include: 1. PR professionals track more than 5 success metrics on average, up from 5.2 last year to 5.7 this year. The most common metric is coverage/stories placed, followed by impact of coverage and pitch activity/engagement. 2. In 2023, 10% more PR professionals plan to measure message pull-through, while 7% more will measure social shares/mentions, share of voice, and pitches sent. 3. Spreadsheets are the most commonly used tool for reporting, though there is a decrease in their use from last year. Presentations are increasingly favored. 4. The largest proportion of surveyed PR professionals work in public relations agencies (54%), followed by marketing/advertising agencies (23%), technology (12%), and nonprofit (9%) industries. 5. The most significant challenge in measuring PR success is connecting PR metrics to business outcomes, followed by proving the value of metrics and accurately measuring results. 6. The majority of PR professionals (56%) believe that their PR metrics from 2022 will outperform those from 2021. The study was conducted by surveying 805 PR professionals from October 11th to October 22, 2022. The majority of respondents are from the United States (83%), with smaller proportions from Europe, Canada, and other regions.
